What Is Web3 Marketing? A Plain-English Guide for Crypto Projects

By Oddrix · · 3 min read

Web3 marketing is the work of making a blockchain project understood, trusted and used. The channels look familiar (press, communities, search, social), but the audience, the risks and the rules are different from marketing a normal app.

How it differs from ordinary digital marketing

Your audience can verify you. Contracts, treasury wallets and token distributions are public. Claims such as "liquidity locked" or "audited" can be checked by anyone in minutes, so marketing that outruns reality is found out quickly.

Communities are the product's front door. Many users meet a project in a Telegram group or Discord server before they ever read the website. If that space is full of spam or unanswered questions, it does more damage than any advert can fix.

Scams set the baseline. Crypto users are trained to be suspicious, because impersonation, fake airdrops and pump-and-dump schemes are common. Good Web3 marketing removes reasons to doubt you; it doesn't just add excitement.

Promotion is regulated. In the UK, crypto-asset promotions have been inside the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) financial promotions regime since 8 October 2023. In the EU, MiCA sets rules for marketing communications about crypto-assets. In the US, anyone paid to promote a security must disclose it under Section 17(b) of the Securities Act. Marketing a utility, a game or a developer tool is different from promoting a token as an investment, and the wording matters.

The main channels

  1. Press and media. Press releases and sponsored articles on crypto publications build a record that the project exists and explain what it does. Most paid placements are labelled "sponsored" or "press release", and that's fine as long as nobody pretends otherwise. See how crypto PR distribution works.
  2. Community. Telegram and Discord are where questions get answered, updates land and trust is built or lost. See Telegram vs Discord.
  3. Search. People search for "how to use X", "is X safe" and "X vs Y". Useful pages that answer those questions keep bringing in visitors for years. See the practical guide to Web3 SEO.
  4. Social and creators. X (Twitter) remains the main public square for crypto. Creator partnerships can work, but paid posts must be clearly disclosed (#ad in the UK under the CAP Code).
  5. Product-led growth. Integrations, partnerships and a product people want to talk about. Marketing amplifies this; it can't replace it.

Where to start

If you have a live product, start with clear basics: a website that explains it, a well-run community and one accurate press release. If you're pre-launch, focus on the community and on content that answers real questions, then announce through PR when there's something concrete to announce.

Oddrix Web3 PR offers PR & media distribution, community management and crypto SEO at fixed USD prices, with no guaranteed results and no fake engagement.
