A Practical Guide to Web3 SEO
By Oddrix · · 3 min read
Search engines send steady, high-intent visitors to crypto projects that answer real questions well. Here's a practical approach that holds up over time.
1. Fix the technical foundations
Many Web3 sites are single-page apps that render content only in the browser. Search engines can process JavaScript, but it's slower and less reliable than plain HTML. Check that:
- Important content is in the initial HTML (server-side rendering or static generation).
- Each page has a unique title, meta description, one H1 and a canonical URL.
- There is an XML sitemap and a sensible robots.txt that doesn't block CSS, JS or important pages.
- Status codes are right: real 404s for missing pages, 301s for moved ones.
- Core Web Vitals are healthy: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 s, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 ms and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1 (Google's "good" thresholds). Heavy wallet libraries and 3D scenes should load after the main content.
Google Search Console is free and shows indexing problems, queries and Core Web Vitals field data. Set it up first.
2. Map search intent to pages
Group keywords by what the searcher wants:
- Learn: "what is restaking", "how does a bridge work". These need guides.
- Compare: "X vs Y", "best wallet for Solana". These need honest comparisons.
- Do: "swap ETH to SOL", "create Solana token". These need tool pages.
- Trust: "is X safe", "X audit". These need security and transparency pages.
One page per intent. Don't create dozens of near-identical pages that target variations of the same keyword; that's thin content.
3. Write content that shows real expertise
Finance and crypto topics fall under Google's "Your Money or Your Life" category, where quality raters look closely at experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T). In practice:
- Explain things accurately, with dates and sources for facts and figures.
- Show who is behind the site: team, company and contact details.
- Update or remove outdated pages, because crypto changes fast.
- Don't publish price predictions dressed up as analysis.
4. Earn links properly
Links from relevant, real websites still matter. Good ways to earn them: original data, useful tools, clear documentation, partnerships and genuine PR. Paid links must be marked rel="sponsored" (or nofollow) under Google's spam policies. Private blog networks, hacked links and automated link schemes risk penalties and aren't worth it.
5. Use structured data honestly
Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Article and FAQ markup help search engines understand your pages. Never add review or rating markup for reviews you don't have.
6. Measure the right things
Track impressions, clicks and average position in Search Console, plus conversions on your site. Expect months, not days. No one can guarantee a first-place ranking.
A 90-day starter plan
- Weeks 1–2: technical audit and fixes, Search Console, sitemap.
- Weeks 3–4: keyword research and intent map.
- Weeks 5–12: publish 4–8 genuinely useful pages, improve internal links and pursue a few relevant link opportunities.
